How about Spirit being accessible on attribute nodes in passive tree?
When looking at the other derived stats in the character screen, life, ES, mana, armour etc. - it feels like Spirit is the odd one out to me.
Everything else relies on a combination of your attributes PLUS some modifier from armour, weapons, jewels and the like. Only Spirit is derived specifically from gear. It's not dissimilar for gem abilities. You need base strength, intel, dexterity ... and _spirit_ to use them. No dependence on life, ES, mana etc. here. I'd like to propose that Spirit should be the fourth character attribute, and one that you can then spec. into on the passive tree rather than specifically rely on stats from gear. There's some node for spirit on the top left area, near the all element circle, just down of mind over matters. It's not a lot but it's a start.
