Status of the unexpected game pause issue (see inside for details)
In a devstream, Jonathan noted that they found a game crash that was caused by an nVidia driver crash. They couldn't reproduce the bug and so they did a workaround that actually loaded all the context before the crash and then paused the game as soon as the driver crashed and loaded in all the context. The effect was that a player would not crash PoE2, but the game would halt for a few seconds during context switching, and then resume. People who complained about an unusual "pause" were given this explanation.
The way to avoid the nVidia crash was to revert your driver to 566.36, which was the last driver version that did not cause the crash. I've been running that driver ever since and now I'm wondering now if I can update my drivers, is it safe? Anyone know the status of this issue? " I don't know the status of that exact issue, but on my system version 576.02 has never crashed or had any issues whatsoever.
Halleluiah! Maybe that means they finally fixed it. I'm off to update now, thanks for the note.

Nope, they did NOT fix this yet. I updated to the current driver and midway through a fight, the driver crashed, the game paused while unloading/loading the new context, and I came back into the fight. Because the game is paused I took no damage during the fight, but I had to wait a couple of seconds while the screen completely froze, followed by a second or two of the grinding gears graphic before returning to play.
Back to 566.36. Didn't take long, either. First map I tried after updating the driver. Man does not stop playing because he grows old. He grows old because he stops playing. - Oliver Wendell Holmes

Problem went away as soon as I reverted back to 566.36. I sure hope nVidia or GGG can figure out why the driver is crashing and unload this kludge of a "fix".

" I guess I can see why it's taking them a long time. I've been using 576.02 since April and play PoE2 pretty much every day. No issues. Studio driver, not "GeForce Game Ready" build if it matters.
I'll consider using the Studio driver and see if that makes a difference for me. What exactly is the "studio driver"?
I'm not sure why you're not experiencing this. Jonathan explicitly acknowledged the bug during the livestream and even mentioned the workaround of reverting to the old driver. He explained in some detail how they had to catch the driver crashing, pause the game, reload the previous state and then resume the game, which explains the intermittent pauses. Every time that pause happens is because the nVidia driver crashed. They apparently still don't know what's causing it. Man does not stop playing because he grows old. Ok, so Studio drivers are designed to be used by creative workers who require a "more stable" release, as compared to the ever-changing landscape of the gaming world. I guess I would think of Studio drivers as the old WHQL certification.
I tried installing the latest Studio driver and the game pause took some time before it happened, but it still happened, which means that the driver is still crashing somewhere during PoE2. At that point, the game pauses and the kludge fix gets done and then the game resumes. It happened to me again last night but because I was playing in a multiplayer instance with my wife, the "pause" was only on my screen and when the game resumed, I was Dead. In a juiced T15 map. Lost 10% exp, etc. I reverted back to 566.36. Man does not stop playing because he grows old. He grows old because he stops playing. - Oliver Wendell Holmes
