The games biggest problem is optimization

I really love PoE2, so much so that i'm even grinding to 100 as we speak, almost level 99. The content, systems and stuff I think are great but the one thing I can't get over is how poor the games graphical optimization is. My PC is no slouch, I have a Tomahawk B550, 64gb ripsaw ram, RTX 5080, Ryzen 9 5950x, excellent cooling. Temps are below 70c gaming even. Yet NO configuration of the graphical settings, nor modifying my 3D settings in Nvidia control panel, nor undervolting, or overclocking..NONE of it can give me consistently good performance in this game. It really is my one main pain point when it comes to this.

Has there been any comment? Is it possible they will eventually get it so this game runs as it should on a system like mine? My specs kick the crap out of even the high requirements for this game, I should be able to run it on ultra with basically no frame drops like I do for other graphically intense titles, Oblivion Remastered, Steampunk, Expedition 33, Last of us - these are all hugely graphically intense titles that my system runs flawlessly so why I ask can it not run PoE2 well?

I'd also like to add that I have been constantly monitoring my temps and CPU/GPU usage throughout all of this, and whether I have it utilizing 90% of my GPU or 30% of it, it still basically always runs more or less the same. Which is mostly good, but with still a lot of slowdowns, even going as low as 40ish frames during certain instances of breach/delerium/ritual etc.

My CPU is almost never above 30%, it will occasionally go up near 50 or 60% at most while loading a zone, but always dips back down to near 30ish % for fighting/mapping itself.

Really just wish this game would run well, its the one and only complaint i really have, but i feel its a pretty big thing as far as quality of life for the game goes.
I aggree
I will try to explain this a little bit. During early access you are playing an alpha version of the game. This is the phase most developers will prototype ideas and concepts with little regard to the optimization and work flow.

What ends up happening is most of the core mechanics and mathematics processing is running on a single thread. Add in the fact it is unoptimized code and you will 100% a single cpu thread. This is heavily impacting the fps. Poorly designed games also suffer from this.

Let's hope they fix it over time but for now they will likely focus on finishing the campaign and getting the core game mechanics together before optimizing the data flow and update tick process
thanks for the reply. Thats interesting and i really know nothing about game dev so ill gladly take someone elses word for it that does. It does seem a bit...strange to me though. From my perspective, your game running well should be the first and foremost thing in your mind as a dev. I feel like a lot of people other than myself could get turned off pretty quickly by having 30fps or whatever during fights when theyre trying out PoE2 for the first time, and that might be enough for them to never give it another shot after that.

I guess it is what it is, and maybe thats just the nature of game deving in 2025. I wish there was more emphasis on the game running smoothly before anything else was even in place.

I wish there was more emphasis on it too. I feel many games suffer long term as they cut content and ideas due to fps loss. There is only so much they can do within the time frame people expect. I specialize in optimization and engineering of data processing but I am rare in the programming scene.

Most game dev teams consist of a 6 to 1 : artist to programmer ratio at minimum. I have seen some as high as 30 to 1 with no engineers on the team. A lot of artists and creative minds do not look at the hardware and software capacity limits. They just want to design what they see in their heads and then fix it later but it is a hard lesson to learn. If you spend a lot of money only on programmers, you get no content. If you spend a lot of money only on artists, you get a poor performing mess.
As a side note. Turn off vsync in game. Use your video cards fps limiter or vsync instead.

In game options set the background fps limit to 30 and foreground to 60 or 120.

Try using the Vulkan drivers to see if you have more stability.

Some people have issues with the upscale options. I prefer the look and performance with it off. Fake frames are not my thing.

I have seen reports of the triple buffer option impacting clients.

The shadows and lighting have a massive impact on fps. Some areas have more dramatic shadows and lighting. The particle effects are amplifying this issue. Reduce or turn off global illumination. Restart your client after changing them.
Optimization REALLY needs a big pass, i'm on the recommended system requirements for the game with everything set to low and i still get fps drops playing lightning spear with freeze herald of thunder

I said this before but a game like this should aim to run at 40~60 fps even on a steam deck, that should be the goal for performance

On top of that we have a terrible FSR implementation that makes even something insignificant like Charges to look extremely blurry with literally no performance gain or benefit, this happen even at the "no upscale" or "quality" settings

Also, forcing dynamic shadows is such a big mistake that i don't even know what to say

Setting texture detail to balanced was the one thing that fixed my FPS issues
Optimizations are coming eventually, in facts some are coming with this week patch.
