Sceptre ally buffs not working with "Inspiring ally" passive

Inspiring ally states all increases and decreases to companion damage should affect me. Other passives from the tree which affect companion damage does seem to change my own damage. However, using a sceptre with added ally damage does not change my damage. Companions are classified as allies, therefore the increased damage should work on myself when using Inspiring Ally?
