1. Why I think this ascendancy is not as used as much

Let me start by saying that this ascendancy is not as bad as people may think. The ascendancy points it has are quite good. Having 85 to chaos resistance is quite good, the extra chaos damage chance is good, into the breach is quite good but I think not enough purple flames spawn(it is mostly red or blue). The reason I think that it is not as selected is because no quarterstaff skill converts physical damage to chaos. Right now, there is Ice Strike and Tempest Flurry for elemental damage and the Invoker ascendancy but nothing for the Acolyte. There KIND of is the Hand of Chayula but using just that is not great. So if you want the ascendancy to use chaos damage you have to go with a bow or crossbow for poison damage or a wand for contagion. A skill called something like Doom Blows or Chayula Flurry should be added.
Currently, the Consuming Questions ascendancy node does not work very well. It only leeches energy shield if you are also leeching mana and once the mana is full it stops leeching energy shield. I also think that for this note a "30% of leech instant" is needed.

2. Mantra of Destruction

I think this skill is not worth using currently. The combo to activate it is too big(10 currently), the animation for its activation is quite long and it empowers only one attack.
I think this needs to be redesigned. One idea is to make it like the Charged Staff skill while also keeping the Purple Flame of Chayula on kill effect. The extra caveat that needs to happen is that you cannot have charged staff AND mantra at the same time or the second one you activate is at 50 percent strength.
The second idea I have for this is for it to work with the Into The Breach ascendancy node and make it so that while it is active, purple flames are more likely to spawn as opposed to red or blue.

3. A few changes I would like to see

For Tiral of Chaos:
The escort the statue trial. Please make the statue work like the wisps. The statue is currently quite slow and makes the trial a huge chore.
For the stay alive trial. Please make it so that if you kill all the monsters you can jump forward. Make it so that if you click on the start obelisk it starts the next wave early and deducts 5 seconds from the time left.
For Trial of the Sekhemas:
Please remove the collect hourglasses move from Zarokh. The main reason is that it is essentially a one-shot mechanism based on your movement speed. This is problematic because the rabbit's foot boon is less common on your next run after you pick it.
Please make the have no armour and no evasion afflictions the same as the energy shield one(as in you have 50% less). It makes no sense to have a minor affliction brick your run. It is also problematic when you are playing a pure dex or str char. And for the dex char if you have Acrobatics it makes that affliction even more problematic. If it was a major affliction that makes more sense.
