how did i die

was fighting Zarokil, the temporal and got the boon that you cant take damage until you complete the next room and got him down to half when he did his lighting spin attack and after the first 2 circles i got hit 4 times and died up until that piont the boon prevented all his damage. so what happened, it feel like a bug.
