Control clicking a map into the device while you already have one in the map slot deletes the map item from your inventory. Tried it twice on a tower. Put a map in with control left click and if i do it again while the first map is already in the device the map i control click gets deleted.

UPDATE: Found the maps on a completely different adjacent non-tower map. Probably not intended but the items are appearently not deleted.
