Frostbolt bug with Snakepit ring

Having an issue with frostbolt being extremely inconsistent when it comes to exploding on contact with enemies. I have the snakepit ring to stop piercing however it randomly stops exploding on enemies and only forks or chains no matter what i do.

My frostbolts pass straight through all enemies even with snakepit on :(
