Doom the Dark Ages did everything PoE 2 is trying to do
It introduced meaningful, impactful combat into a gameplay loop otherwise predicated on quick twitch reactions and a go-faster mindset.
It did it by rebuilding the game, particularly the enemies and their attacks, from the ground up. Trying to shoehorn these same mechanics into an ARPG without starting from the ground floor is why PoE2 feels like it is fruitlessly flailing around. It's worth noting that +2 maps are a dangerous thing. They can cause players to get out of their depth - playing maps that are too hard for the items they currently have. I can't wait to play this weekend
Hopefully when its released I can say "Maybe PoE2 should be more Doom-like" because it looks like adrenaline fuelled fun |
