Works either way d2 forced it harder than poe , that being said if the game is harder do we really need it.if the grind is longer...
Unless you have more atlas tiers more ways to juice level in the pipeline running towers for xp with xp works but it is still a chug and the exp penalty is helping player retention. Even for EA ... but EA is full release so..
The xp penalty is not helping player retention. I'm not even sure how I would start to argue that point.
Xp loss is easily the most frustrating thing in this game. However, it is influenced by everything else in the game. This is why its gathering so much hate- its a symptom of other frustration. It also magnifies very easily with bad/inexperienced players.
Its only the most frustrating thing if you fail to realise that gaining levels past 90 isnt that important for your character power.

Also Softcore vs Hardcore doesn't mean Easy vs Hard. It means normal vs hardcore. The difficulty of the game is completely unchanged in every aspect.
The game is supposed to punish you so that you stop to think and realize why you're dying 6 times per map instead of progressing.
Better gear drops in hardcore, which modifies the difficulty. Being unable to make mistakes also modifies the difficulty.
If the motivation is punishing me to make me think- thats a pretty rude assumption. Assume you're talking to a gamer as good as you are- no one playing this game wants to die.
Everyone realizes when they die, they played poorly. Except, for exceptions- we don't need to get into any of that.
Anything past death is extra.

I did a follow up edit to include the reviewer names, because of course you would deny the reality.
Idk on my steam the only one of those that shows up in the first 40 is the first one. But I will take your word for it that it for some reason does on your screen.
Ok so you found 4 steam reviews where someone among other things mentioned exp loss.
Now scroll down and press "Browse all 167 433 reviews"
Filter by negative only. Scroll down as many pages as you would like, press CTRL+F and type in whichever combination of exp loss, exp penalty, death penalty, etc is most favorable to you. And then let me know how many results you get vs how many reviews you have open.
Also if this is the thing everyone is complaining about then why is this never adressed by the devs? Why in the multitudes of interviews that content creators have with the devs have this never been asked? Even tho they get a majority of their questions from the community and / or their viewers?
The only two answers I can think of is:
A) No one ever brings it up or has requested it as a question.
B) The people hosting the interview ignores it because its obviously a stupid question
Welcome to the world of a dev. It doesn't matter what everyone says, you have to think for yourself and figure out what is best.
The opinions of the masses are only so viable. Even in this case, even if everyone said its bad- I still think its other things that make it bad.
If you could get it back as fast as death took it, assuming you were playing well- would people care anymore? Of course not.
Frustration with xp loss is obviously a symptom of another issue; however, there is a major issue that needs to be fixed.
Lots of people are clearly frustrated.

Or make scaling consistent. I think that is the real issue.
Also some clarity things. Item tiers are 1-9, so make maps 1-9, and scale from 0-100 from beginning of game to 9.
There should be increased difficulty, but not grind. Grind equates boredom.

XP loss on death is a great feature and it will obviously stay in the game. It makes leveling up towards the upper levels have stakes. It's an inherent part of a proper ARPG and incentivizes building defensives.
As usual the majority of new players here want everything handed to them with 0 effort and 0 friction.

This is a mechanic best left to the Hardcore leagues.
I don't think you fully realize what Hardcore is.
LE doesn't have exp loss and its a fun game. So no it isn't that important of a "feature".
And yes stuff like this should not exist in Softcore.

I did not play POE1 so POE2 was my first experience with GGG. I have played plenty of other games that require grinding so I am no stranger to it. My thoughts on the XP loss:
Should there be XP loss on higher levels? Yes but it should be limited to the XP you have earned on that map or it should be tweaked a bit because it is rather harsh.
I, having leveled a few characters past 90, have a system that seems to work better for me and should help you out.
A. I save all of those +experience waystones, +experience tablets, and untainted paradise maps.
B. I find an area with 3 overlapping towers. I take the shortest path to each tower and juice it with the +experience tablets. I mark one of the towers so I can return later.
C. I play normally until I get past the halfway point of a level. I tend to shy away from "harder" content during the last half of a level to minimize the possibility of dying.
D. When I am about 3-4 bubbles from level, I go back to the +experience juiced area and start clearing using +experience waystones. I will also go back to some of the untainted paradise maps and run those as well.
E. Once I level up, I hit all of that harder content.
While I do agree that the system needs a little tweaking, you can choose to level up or stand there and complain about it. I chose to level.
I feel like i'm gonna get tired eventually of repeating this over and over but Omen of Amelioration is 8-12ex right now (which is more or less the same than what you spend on properly juicing a map)
This reduces penalty to 2% which at lvl 95 is basically one breach on a lvl 82 map.
Nowhere did I say that I don't use omens. I always have an omen on me after I get halfway through a level. I was simply offering other ways to help with the level grind past 90.
I juice all of my maps unless I see ignited ground or some BS pop up so, it doesn't cost me any more. These are drops that I save so it literally costs me nothing more than juicing my maps normally.
95 Blood Mage, 93 Invoker, 95 Deadeye, 96 Gemling, 92 Amazon, 92 Stormweaver, 90 Smith of Kitava

"Poll" with no disagree option is kind of hard to action upon.
Anyway, -1 (I guess). The exp loss only really hits you past level 90 AND at such levels you can just buy the exp loss prevention omens.
