Quite newcomer unfriendly... What now?

So I never played PoE, I did play Titan Quest and Diablo so I am not new to the genre.
A friend invited me to the game saying it's great.

Now I am doing Act 1. From there, there are 2 quests.
1 is in the zone directly after the camp -> Killing the Devourer.
The other is reaching Grelwood.

I am level 4, I have cleaned the zone before entering the mud burrow, cleaned the burrow. I am unable to kill the Devourer. The damages are crazy insane.

What's the message here? Because if I have to die and retry Soul like style to get the perfect timing on every single dodge, there are other game aimed at that specifically...

The boss is turning around making the read of the attack unnecessary hard. If the damage where in check at least you could get around that difficulty.

But the boss is like hard to read, cleaving, hard to go around, has adds, has big add killing you from behind, poison and 2 one shot attacks.

Am I missing something here?

Probably?

I killed that boss with nothing but a stick more times than I can count
I have stated earlier that they really need to include a 'Beginners SSF' option imo. It would be so perfect for newcomers and casuals to easily play that also don't have 23 hours to spare a day.

yeah, what you are missing is a deep understanding of all mechanics and available skills.

That is not your fault. The difficulty curve is just too steep too early. The game is entirely build dependent and can range from near impossible to ridiculously easy.

Also not your fault, some skills are just useless in the beginning or even stay useless in endgame.

This sure is not a good sign if you already struggle at the beginning of the game, however I seriously doubt you played other ARPGs extensively.

I'm not sure what should be the recommendation...more tutorial and handholding I suppose? this could annoy current players tho....so I don't know, you can try to understand the game...read more about it, etc but you might think it's not a fun thing to do.

In the end there's chances this genre is not for you.

Also keep in mind the game is still in development so coming back for the 1.0 release might be the best solution for you. If at that point you still strugle, I'd reconsider playing another game/genre.

It's a great way to offer a useless piece of advice. As mentioned earlier I finished Diablo 2/3, Titan Quest and Diablo 4 (including Uber bosses).

So no I am not new to genre. My point is as mentioned in the original post:

The reading of the strat is clumsy as the boss moves in a ways where the animation is hidden. All happens and is animated in the face but the best way is to be in his back. So there are plenty of ways to hide the source of the animation.

The stacking of skills from a first boss is also quite dumb. Giving adds, big add, DoT, AoE, one shotters is a crazy way to introduce boss fights this early in the game.

There should be a better learning curve or an ease on the damage. I ended up killing it but it's no surprise that PoE2 was flagged Soul-like in the past.

I would refrain to use the logic: "quit it" when you face a legitimate wall.

My question was: Is this really a good way to guest newcomers to the PoE franchise?

But some other players replied with quite more interesting topics such as:
Skill selection, learning curve of char optimization as well as build knowledge.

Apparently, talking with friends starting the game with a bare monk was not the smartest move as well.

Anyway I ended up killing it but I stick to the point that the difficulty is quite brutal super early.

I think so, yes. This isn't me pretending to be a god gamer, but I really don't think the boss is hard at all.

I was new to poe when I started poe2 too, and never had a problem with it. Maybe it's just the path that you choose that made it harder, it's hard to tell.

What could be better is explaining certain things better at the beginning, but I assume this will come with time with some side quests.

Now on why it's a good thing for it to be "hard":

There's too many mobile-like arpgs out there, they pretty much play for themselves. Poe2 can be marketed as a "hard" arpg for people who want that, and the niche that didn't exist before now does. Having a "hard" boss at the beginning can let people understand that this isn't the usual stuff you see in the genre.

We are quite far from being able to achieve that, as right now the game is in an identity crisis, but we will see with time.
Getting frustrated with the game's second mini boss is pretty bad lol. It has nothing at all to do with your build or your character selection--you're level 4.

Here's my advice for newcomers:
Save your gold. The merchants in town are going to provide you (probably) all of your equipment upgrades while playing through the campaign. Their stock refreshes when you level up. Go check their stuff every few levels or when you start to feel weak.
Act 1 boss: cold damage. Get a cold res ring. Act 2: lightning. Act 3: mostly fire.
Don't pigeonhole yourself into "the archetype" of the monk. The game is totally out of balance right now and you'll likely do significantly more damage using a spear than anything else. Look up build guides for the campaign specifically.

Enjoy the difficulty while you can. Seriously. There are a thousand things that need to be sorted out in early access. The campaign is the most coherent part of the game right now.
the devourer is not the difficulty spike i would have expected anyone to complain about. Count Geonor will be exciting.

I'm a mid-tier PoE1 player, and I thought the Devourer was one of the easiest bosses in PoE2. I've had a character die to the Miller, but I've never lost a character to the Devourer.

You either have a super janky build, or you aren't using dodge roll.

I just typed "Poe2 Devourer" into YouTube, and found several videos that will help you. Good luck.
