There are a lot of benefits that outweighs the extra hp. You can have much more than 50% more damage and get a whole bunch of defensive benefits.

I never said explosions from Sanguimancer were not good or suggested another merc was better. I even made sure I mostly listed things that could be used on the Sanguimancer.

Objectively speaking, there is no reason to remove your merc on bossing. Just equip it with good enough gear that it'll get you more than 50% more damage and it's strictly better than no merc if it survives. Plus, you can even get a merc tailored for bossing and switch.

Saying "the only thing that is good enough to justify the +50% health is explosions" is not accurate. You can get more damage than that by building the merc correctly. That is what I was answering to, no more, no less.

Fair enough. Although I still don't see the "much more than 50% more damage" part. I would say that you can get about as much damage as the boss gets extra life. Which indeed justifies having a merc.

I wasn't sure if they would reliably survive (as opposed to giving the boss +50% hp, dying and taking away your benefits). But after testing it last night I can say for sure that the merc can be truly immortal with a proper setup.

I don't think you're taking your merc to challenging enough maps LOL...

Mine has already died twice tonight. Once to a juiced t16.5 map with 60% less defences (my ES was 40% of what it normally is, and I didn't notice until death #3), and in wave 13/15 of the simulacrum.

I actually managed to finish the simulacrum for the first time ever. Crap loot of course.

Note: the merc is geared per page 1. Level 83, boiling blood, pride, etc, no elemental weakness. 5341 life, armor 2332, evasion 2242, all resists > 75%. Most expensive item was the elem weakness ring; 1 div. Rarity is 149%.

It's possible some sanguimancers are tankier than others.

Simulacrum last waves
I did 4 Simulacrums for the challenge. Her hp didn't move at all.

T16.5/T17 have some nasty mods, of course. But I haven't felt suicidal enough to do the worst of them. Can always just reroll.

There is the Risk scarab, new to this league. It adds random T17 mods. That should be challenging for sure. You have to be prepared for things like reflect, reduced defenses, no auras... Maybe I'll try that, just to see if my merc gives a damn :)

Also making staff with 0 links is kinda pain... i quess it's something similar to hit 6-link, maybe even rarer.
PS: i'm dumb, i crafted 6 unlinked with bench craft easily xD

links on the single target staff dont matter. you dont need to avoid them either though.

The other one is a Runegraft. It counts as a different mastery for Polymath damage bonus.

0-link staff: buy a staff with 1-2 unlinked sockets and use the crafting bench for 6S. It doesn't add any links.

It's a small amount of extra damage, but of course my OCD demanded that I should do it :)
Final update for 3.26

Another league is done! 40/40 on my own, as usual.

Merc is the best league mechanic ever. A well geared Sanguimancer adds about 40% more damage, while giving the bosses 50% more life. A slight loss in single target effectiveness. But it's totally worth it. EXPLOSIONS! They are simply awesome. Mapping becomes a whole lot faster and satisfying. Plus the extra Quantity and Rarity. Not only you farm and progress faster, but you also get noticeably better loot and currency. I will be shocked if mercs don't get added to the core game. The best thing since sliced bread!
