You're simply wrong depending where on the tree you start. On the left side of the tree you are almost forced to go right to get ea if you want good defense at late endgame. An extra 5-10 points can add a lot of flexibility.

Merc doesn't even start on the left side of the tree. It literally starts in the middle.

Not to mention that about a third of nodes or so are still missing from the left side, which will be added as classes will be released there.

This is true for every game, even nowhere near soulslike. Thus it provides a good latch point for a white knight to pretend everyone who struggles with reaching level 100 is a fool.

Only problem is, any 3rd party poe ladder website shows level 100 is way less common than your theory would explain. Once, I've reached level 100 in poe1 with a glass cannon character which didn't even have the cannon/dps by poe1 standards. And without 5way service too. It was interesting experience. And problem is way beyond "noob-only". Looking forward to see your parade of lvl 100 character in your newly-unhidden profile.

Ahah, okay, we'll chew it even more for you:
lvl 95: 5940 characters
lvl 96: 6305
lvl 97: 2565
lvl 98: 637
lvl 99: 122
lvl 100: 52

total lvl 95+: 15621. This leaves 58188 waiting to get acquainted with your breakthrough player problem theory.

Now, keep in mind that poe2 ninja doesn't collect character data passively yet, so total amount of characters is likely higher. While players who do use PoB2 and link themselves to ninja are the most dedicated part of the audience, aimed to grind endgame and get results. If they didn't level up higher, it wasn't for total lack of trying.

Retour: exp penalty as it was made in poe1 and poe2 is overly punishing, and softcore players are bound to repeat it due to bugs and obscure mechanics of poe combat. GGG didn't leave it without change for so long out of care for their players. Any other implementation, from global difficulty levels to reworking penalty into survival bonus would've been better than this.
+1, why do we need further punishment on death? Artificially padding game time through EXP loss makes no sense when game time is already pretty extreme for the average player.
